We urgently need volunteer drivers in Glasgow to help distribute food from our FareShare warehouse.

As the cost of living crisis deepens, there is sadly now more demand for our surplus food supply than ever before. Volunteer drivers in Glasgow can help us fight hunger and food waste by distributing food to organisations supporting people in food poverty.

A standard driving licence is all you need to deliver our food once or twice a week to children’s clubs, homeless hostels and refuges across Glasgow and the West of Scotland. We’ve got the vans, we just need you!

What will I be doing?

  • You will be the vital link between us and the charities, getting the food to where it’s needed
  • Dropping off the weekly orders of food at local charities and collecting surplus from local food businesses
  • You’ll be the friendly face of FareShare Glasgow and West of Scotland, interacting with the charities, making sure they get the food they need
  • Working with other volunteers to load up the van with daily deliveries before you head out

Requirements

  • Van drivers must be at least 25 years old and hold a full, clean UK driving license
  • Confident to drive a medium-sized van
  • Good at map reading and able to use a Sat Nav system
  • Positive, friendly and personable, interacting well with different people
  • Able to perform physical tasks including lifting and loading
  • All volunteers must join the PVG scheme (Move On will cover the fee for this)
  • Volunteers can choose how many hours they are happy to commit a week, but we would prefer a regular commitment (i.e. the same days and hours each week) so we can plan our food deliveries accordingly

Benefits

  • Active and sociable role, building relationships directly with the charities we support
  • Gain a variety of skills such as route planning, organising and communication skills
  • Working reference available after three months in the role
  • You will directly ensure that good quality food is not wasted and gets into the hands of the people who need it
  • Reasonable travel expenses and a free lunch
  • Volunteers will be supported by our friendly team of staff, volunteers and trainees

How to apply

We urgently need volunteer drivers in Glasgow now more than ever before. If you would like to help, please contact Gordon on gordon@moveon.org.uk or 0141 958 1133 ASAP.

Would like to volunteer in our warehouse instead?

If you don’t fancy driving, volunteering as a warehouse assistant is another rewarding way to help end food poverty and reduce food waste.

Volunteering in our warehouse is also a great way to meet new people and keep fit and all you need is a sturdy pair of hands!

What will I be doing?

  • Working as part of a team to manually sort and store large deliveries of surplus food
  • Helping to assemble the daily deliveries of food for local charities and community groups
  • Making sure the food is within use by dates and handled safely
  • Contacting our charity members to talk through the food we have available to create their weekly food order

Requirements

  • Able to perform physical tasks including lifting and loading
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills to record quantities and types of food
  • Work well as part of a team
  • Happy to complete tasks independently according to instruction
  • Adaptable – managing surplus can be unpredictable so day to day tasks can vary
  • Positive, friendly, and enthusiastic about tackling food waste and food poverty
  • All volunteers must join the PVG scheme (Move On will cover the fee for this)
  • Volunteers can choose how many hours they are happy to commit a week, but we would prefer a regular commitment (i.e. the same days and hours each week) so we can plan our food deliveries accordingly

Benefits

  • Be part of a team of likeminded people
  • Gain warehouse management skills such as a Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene certificate and forklift training
  • Be at the forefront of stopping good food from going to waste
  • Reasonable travel expenses and a free lunch
  • Volunteers will be supported by our friendly team of staff, volunteers and trainees

About FareShare Glasgow and the West of Scotland

FareShare Glasgow and the West of Scotland works with the food and drink industry to save good quality surplus food from going to waste and redistributes it to organisations working with the most vulnerable people in the community. The organisations we work with include community centres, addiction centres and lunch clubs for older people.

Our FareShare Glasgow and the West of Scotland service provides food for more than 78,000 meal portions every week. Volunteers are at the heart of this impact – we simply could not feed as many people as we do without our dedicated volunteer team.

FareShare Glasgow and West of Scotland is based at 1070 South Street, Scotstoun, G14 0AP.
