In our new volunteer case study, we chat to Finlay, who volunteers at our Move On Wood Recycling social enterprise in Edinburgh.
Finlay started volunteering with Move On Wood Recycling last summer and now volunteers every Thursday. He has a hands-on volunteer role, supporting our social enterprise in a variety of ways, including helping with wood collections across Edinburgh and the Lothians; removing nails from wood in our workshop; and weighing bags of wood to be sold.
Finlay is currently at college part-time and says what he hopes to get out of his time volunteering with us is “to learn more about working so I can get a job in the future.”
An important and valued member of our team of staff, volunteers and trainees, Finlay says one of his favourite things about his volunteer role is that “the people are nice and helpful.”
He says his “favourite thing is working to remove all the nails and also going to different places in the van. It doesn’t get boring.”
Finlay has also spent time with our staff one-to-one, learning how to use the different tools in our workshop.
Volunteers are at the heart of Move On. We really mean it when we say we couldn’t make the difference we do without their support.
Whether you’re supporting a young person one-to-one, helping to distribute food to charities and community groups, or making upcycled wooden furniture, our volunteers help us make a huge social and environmental impact.
We welcome people from all backgrounds and provide full training and support. You don’t need to have previous experience, just a desire to help and willingness to learn.
However you choose to volunteer, we want you to have an interesting and rewarding volunteering experience. Our volunteering roles will give you the opportunity to learn new skills, gain valuable experience, be part of a community of supportive people and make a real difference.
We have a variety of different volunteer roles available in Edinburgh and Glasgow, which are open to individuals, as well as groups of corporate volunteers. Find out more on our website or get in touch to get involved!
