Job summary

Move On Wood Recycling (MOWR) is a social enterprise based in Edinburgh operating as part of Move On, dedicated to creating positive environmental and social impact. We operate circular services across multiple sectors in Edinburgh and The Lothians; waste wood collections, reclaimed timber sales, upcycled, bespoke furniture and employability training and volunteering opportunities for local and young people in our workshop.

As a sessional Development Worker, you will be an essential part of the Move On Wood Recycling team alongside staff, volunteers, and young trainees:  

  • Ensuring that the enterprise operates to a high standard and in a manner that is consistent with the values and purpose of Move On.
  • Working closely with the MOWR Operational Manager and other colleagues.
  • Attending team meetings and wider Move On meetings, where required.

What you’ll be doing

Your duties will vary and will support MOWR operations day-to-day:

1. Woodworking/carpentry

  • Skills and experience of building wooden furniture products
  • Competent with hand tools and machinery
  • Responding efficiently and creatively to customers bespoke furniture ideas
  • Ensuring furniture orders are built and completed in a timely manner
  • Working closely alongside fellow Development Workers in our workshop.
  • Processing used wood ready for resale
  • Ensuring that health and safety standards are established, implemented and maintained.

    2. Waste wood collections

    • Support collections schedule driving our 3.5 tonne caged pick-up truck to numerous locations across Edinburgh and The Lothians to construction sites, businesses & homes.
    • Communicating with site managers and customers.
    • Handling/loading timber on and off vans.

    3. Customer service

    • Serving and communicating effectively with customers in our timber shop.
    • Processing orders at sales desk
    • Answering call and email queries regarding products, orders and bespoke furniture projects
    • processing used wood ready for re-sale, delivering timber, making furniture and working in the shop.
    • Deliver customer furniture orders.

    4. Supervision 

    • To co-ordinate supervision of volunteers and young people in the wood workshop.  
    • Ensuring all payments relating to training allowances and lunch expenses are recorded accurately and within timescales. 
    • Operating a trauma informed approach to young people and volunteers working alongside you in the workshop. We have a number of staff who are working at a trauma-informed and trauma-skilled level to train fellow staff.

      Marketing and Communications Officer vacancy

      Our Marketing and Communications Officer vacancy is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and enthusiastic person to join our marketing team.

      Job title: Marketing and Communications Officer
      Hours: Part-time (14 hours p/w). Although envisioned as a two day per week post, the role could lend itself to a freelancer working more flexible hours on a day rate
      Job type: Maternity cover
      Salary: £26,607 per annum (pro-rata)
      Location: This role can be Glasgow or Edinburgh based, with the option to also work from home.
      Reporting to: Executive Director

      Job summary

      This is a newly created two days per week flexible role for a creative self-starter with social media and digital marketing experience. Although envisioned as a two day per week post, the role could lend itself to a freelancer working more flexible hours on a day rate.

      The Marketing and Communications Officer will be responsible for building awareness of and support for Move On’s work changing lives in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

      We are keen to hear from candidates with experience in a similar role in the third sector, with knowledge of charity communications best practice, particularly around confidentiality and sensitivity.

      What you’ll be doing

      • Contributing to Move On’s marketing strategy through idea generation, content creation, and analytics monitoring
      • Engaging with staff and volunteers across the organisation to gather ideas and content and maximise marketing support for Move On’s different services
      • Creating engaging content for social channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn
      • Finding ways to reach new audiences
      • Planning and creating email marketing newsletters
      • Making content updates on the Move On website
      • Designing marketing materials for web content, leaflets, posters, banners, etc.
      • Proofreading marketing collateral
      • Supporting the Executive Director in any relevant marketing activities as advised

      Requirements for the role

      • 1+ years in a similar marketing role
      • Integrated marketing experience (digital and print)
      • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
      • Self-motivated and organised with a meticulous attention to detail
      • Comfortable and experienced liaising with colleagues and external individuals in various roles and levels of seniority
      • Confident working across multiple projects simultaneously
